Dan Cray did the band thing for five years in the early '90s, but like so many groups, Beyond Id was in the wrong place at the wrong time. "We kinda shot ourselves in the foot," explains Cray from the safety of his home studio, The Rubber Room. "We were really into the Velvet Underground, no-planning, as-it-happens kinda thing; just making a lot of noise that nobody liked. We played all over Boston, but nobody ever wanted us back." After the demise of Beyond Id -- a victim... Topic: Dan Cray
Courtesy of Chris Fenton, a research forensic recording of an 80 megabyte CDC-9877 disk pack. From Fenton: "It is a 'magnetic image' of an 80 megabyte CDC-9877 disk pack that might potentially contain some Cray-1 system software (it might also be blank), of which no known copies currently still exist. I managed to acquire a disk drive from the 1970's that could accept one of these disks, but none of the control electronics worked anymore. I built a robot that manually steps the read heads... This disk contains a backup of the last remaining copy of the Cray Operating System, the original operating system for the Cray-1 and Cray X-MP supercomputer line. The disk likely contains a binary image of COS 1.17 (the last revision of of the OS), as well as other unknown software, and initially belonged to a single-processor Cray X-MP machine. The disk was written in 1989. The machine's I/O Subsystem (IOS) would have likely booted from this disk, and then loaded the OS into main CPU memory.... Topics: Cray, OS, Disk Image, X-MP

Substantial progress has been made recently towards design building and test-flying remotely piloted Micro Air Vehicle's (MAVs). We seek to complement this progress in overcoming the aerodynamic obstacles to.flight at very small scales with a vision stability and autonomy system. The developed system based on a robust horizon detection algorithm which we discuss in greater detail in a companion paper. In this paper, we first motivate the use of computer vision for MAV autonomy arguing that... Topics: CRAY COMPUTERS, PARALLEL COMPUTERS, PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, CONVEXITY, SUPERCOMPUTERS, HARDWARE

Summary: Part 2 of my personal story of experiences with computersSeries: How I Found LinuxSource: http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps.php?id=1811Introduction In the last part I told you of my first encounter with a mainframe computer and the Algol60 language while an undergraduate student at Aberystwyth University. Today I want to talk about the next stage as a postgraduate student at the University of Manchester. It seems to have taken me over 6 months to prepare this episode of this series, for... BD 30deg 3639, the brightest planetary nebula at X-ray energies, was observed with Suzaku, an X-ray observatory launched on 2005 July 10. Using the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer, the K-lines from C VI, O VII, and O VIII were resolved for the first time, and C/O, N/O, and Ne/O abundance ratios determined. The C/O abundance ratio exceeds the solar value by nearly two orders of magnitude, and that of Ne/O by at least a factor of 5. These results indicate that the X-rays are emitted mainly by helium... Abstract. This paper presents a model that is useful for developing resource allocation algorithms for distributed real-time systems .that operate in dynamic environments. Interesting aspects of the model include dynamic environments, utility and service levels, which provide a means for graceful degradation in resource-constrained situations and support optimization of the allocation of resources. The paper also provides an allocation algorithm that illustrates how to use the model for... The first year included a study of the non-visible damage of composite overwrapped pressure vessels with B. Poe of the Materials Branch of Nasa-Langley. Early determinations showed a clear reduction in non-visible damage for thin COPVs when partially pressurized rather than unpressurized. Literature searches on Thicker-wall COPVs revealed surface damage but clearly visible. Analysis of current Analytic modeling indicated that that current COPV models lacked sufficient thickness corrections to...
